Much courage and a stubborn streak.

By Emma Bache

In the latest in an occasional series our resident graphologist, delivers her verdict on Isabella Moore, president of the British Chambers of Commerce.

Life and times of Isabella Moore.

Isabella Moore, 54, is the first woman president of the British Chambers of Commerce. She took up the two-year appointment in September 2002.

Born to a Scottish father and a Polish mother, she grew up in Edinburgh. She studied at the University of Warsaw, gaining an MA in art history in 1974. Moore also holds a diploma in translation from the Institute of Linguists and a degree in economics from the Open University.

She is fluent in Polish and speaks passable German and French. After a stint with Massey Ferguson Perkins in Poland in the 1970s, Moore spent the 1980s translating and interpreting contracts for various companies. In 1984, she became managing partner of Comtec, which provides multilingual documentation services to the manufacturing, engineering and computer software industries. She is married, with one daughter, and lives in Warwickshire.

This writing reveals many irregularities and faltering strokes, which denote stress, if only on a temporary basis. The letter sizes themselves, particularly in the middle zone, are variable which is a key pointer to the writer’s feelings of being somewhat off-balance and certainly caught up in their own emotions at this time. Inconsistency is no stranger to this person, which is shown by their conflicting desire to express and repress feelings and emotions simultaneously.

slant is slightly reclined with a severely reclined personal pronoun. They have problems understanding their own self-image and for this reason are inwardly guarded with those other than their closest confidantes. They are sensitive and proud, but even these qualities are hidden behind an extremely friendly and outgoing personality. The middle zone letter strokes and the connections are deeply garlanded. The writer avoids conflict on a human level despite their frequent feelings of angst and puts much of their energy into communication and expression — whether it be serious negotiation or friendly gossip. The writer will react with sweetness and amiability even when dealing with a person or situation they dislike. Hostilities are hidden whatever the writer is really thinking. The security and protection of friendship is rated highly and the writer can become overly concerned with how others view them. Sentimentality is high and family relationships are of utmost importance.

The pressure of the writing is heavy and particularly so in the vertical axis. There is good physical energy and a very strong stubborn streak. This trait can be perceived as an adherence to principles, but by some as bloody-mindedness. High energy levels and repressed anger are sometimes redirected into excitable or even exhibitionist behaviour. The writer certainly wants to be heard and colleagues and friends can at times feel overwhelmed by their demands.

In contrast to how others see them, the many retraced and covering strokes in all three zones of the writing point to a less self-confident individual.

There is a lot of tension, and normal responses in both the intellectual and emotional sphere are guarded. There is even some retouching of letters and erratic spacing.

Isabella Moore

The writer is struggling at this present time to keep everything together. The sudden and inappropriate disconnection of letters in an otherwise connected script indicates that the normally single-minded writer with firm convictions is temporarily under much stress.

The wide left-hand and narrow right-hand margin shows the ability and desire to move on to the future, but their push/pull relationship with the past causes conflict. However there is much courage and the vitality to overcome most external conflicts. Although the baseline is basically sinuous, towards the end of the script lines rise up across the page. There is no doubt that they are not the type of individual to relish either routine or boredom. Their energetic nature actively seeks out variety and this restlessness is backed up by the long and heavy down strokes, denoting an interest in both material and physical satisfaction. Their need for security and their earthiness creates ambition and single-mindedness. In fact, they do tend to view certain aspects of life in black and white terms, but, on the other hand, their judgment is usually sound.

The rounded bases to letters and the more pointed tops reveal the inner conflict between their mental maturity and their more naive emotional nature. The swollen loops on some “l” strokes and the personal pronoun show that this writer is not above occasional compensatory boasting or at least their own way of asking for reassurance of worth.

Here is someone who is sensitive and proud with a flair for all forms of money-making ventures, but at the same time struggling to conceal their tension and stress with an extrovert and easy-going facade.”
